About this book

This book is a sequel to my first novel about The Smiths of Elouera.

It has been my pleasure to chronicle the lives of Walter and Bridget Smith and their seven remarkable children through the challenges and triumphs that have shaped their journey thus far.

The first book detailed the lives of a family of nine living on a farm over 12 months, ending in August 1922. Their story continues here, covering the next 12 months.

In the gentle rolling hills of rural Australia, where the morning light first touches the old timber slab house of Elouera and the new large brick homestead, we return to the Smith family as they navigate the changing currents of life in 1923.

When we last left them, the two eldest girls, Alice and Eleanor, had been married in a double wedding, to Jim Roberts, son of the neighbouring property owner, and Peter Blake, Assistant Manager of the town department store.

Ernest, now 20, and Alfred, 18, are both fast developing as farmers and have romantic interests in Rose and Beth, respectively. Fifteen-year-old Ann is attending high school in town, staying with Martha and Ivan Blake five nights each school week. Wally is now ten years old, still with the ambition of becoming a vet and an interest in all creatures great and small. Little seven-year-old Charlotte is developing her equestrian skills, riding the three miles to the local school.

Elouera, the seventeen-hundred-acre property, stands as a testament to three generations of Smith family perseverance.

Now, as we turn the page to this new chapter, we find a family in transition. Alice and Eleanor have stepped into their roles as married women, building homes and futures with their chosen partners. Ernest, with his keen understanding of the land, stands at the crossroads of tradition and his own heart’s calling, as does Alfred. The younger children—Ann, Wally and little Charlotte—continue to grow and discover their places in this rich tapestry of rural life.

The year 1923 brings with it the winds of change. The aftermath of the Great War continues to reshape Australian society, and even in the relative isolation of Elouera, modern ideas and technologies beckon. Walter, approaching his fiftieth year, must balance the wisdom of generations past with the promise of what lies ahead. Bridget, ever the steadfast heart of the household, weaves together the threads of family that now extend beyond the homestead’s verandah.

These pages hold the continuing saga of hard work and harvest, of community bonds tested and strengthened, of family ties that stretch but never break. You will find love blooming, wisdom gained through trial, and the quiet courage it takes to build a legacy.

To those who have walked alongside the Smiths through their earlier adventures in my first novel, The Smiths of Elouera, welcome back to the familiar embrace of Elouera. To new friends just discovering this remarkable family, prepare to be welcomed into a world where the land speaks its own language, where family means everything, and where each sunrise brings the promise of stories yet to be told.

The clock has turned, the seasons have shifted, but the heart of Elouera beats on. Let us continue the journey together.
